Angel Falls- the world’s highest waterfall

Angel Falls (the indigenous name is Kerepakupai Meru) is free-falling waterfall in the world with the highest elevation of 979 meters and 807 meters vertical slope. It is located in the Canaima National Park of Sabana region of Bolivar State in Venezuela.

The height of the waterfall is great because before “grounded”, the water is pushed winds and turned into fog.

River Falls connects with Kerep (or commonly called Rio Gauya). This river flows into Churun River – a major tributary of Carrao. According to the vernacular, the “Kerepakupai Meru” means that “waterfall of the deepest place”.


It is sometimes mistakenly that Angel Falls is Churun-meru. That is the name of another waterfall in the Canaima National Park. According to Pemon language,Churun means “thunder”.
In 1912 ,Explorer Venezuela – Ernesto Sanchez La Cruz has found this waterfall, but he did not publish his discovery. The world does not know about them until James “Jimmie” Crawford Angel – an American pilot who flies over this land on 11.13.1933 while searching for values grade ore.
On 10,September,1937, Angel tried to land a Flamingo small plane on Auyan-tepuin top, but it was broken when the wheels sank into the marshy soil. He and three his companions, including his wife were forced to walk down the mountain slope. They took 11 days to find a way come back, but the news of the adventure had been widely known and waterfalls from that brings his name – Angel Falls lkely a respect.
Angel’s plane remained on top of the falls during 33 years before pulling up by a helicopter. They had restored it in the Air Force Museum in Maracay. Now It is displayed at the lawn outside Ciudad Bolivar airport. It’s original.In addition, the plane that we see on Angel Falls top is the only model at the present.
The first record of people that the river provide the water for the waterfall is Latvia explorer-s Aleksandrs Laime or Alejandro Laime according to aboriginal Pemon tribe. He goes up top Auyan-tepui in 1955. During that same trip, he also came to the place where the plane of Angel was stuck – 18 years after the plane landed. He was named the river – one of the most beautiful rivers in Latvia’s called Gauja. While the native name of the waterfall had rarely used, the common name was Kerep River.
